engageThe ‘ENGAGE-Do Your Part for Peace’ project is launching its second phase on Tuesday 21 February 2012 at the Home for Cooperation - 18:30-20:30. The event will be a special opportunity to present statements from interviews given to the ENGAGE programme by the Representatives of the Leaders of the two communities Mssrs. Iacovou and Ozersai as well as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Ms. Buttenheim. Asked about the role of Civil Society (CS) in the peace and reconciliation process in Cyprus, Mr. Iacovou said that it would be very refreshing to see people that are not in the mainstream of political life articulating a position in the capacity of Civil Society on the issues that relate to the solution and ultimately the implementation of the solution to the Cyprus problem. In turn Mr. Ozersay stressed that there are things being done by CS and that the ongoing process is helpful, adding that we need to include more those who are not normally seen or perceived as supporting a comprehensive settlement in order to create an environment for them to participate and share their own views and concerns. Finally Ms. Buttenheim reminded that the Secretary General of the UN has frequently said how important the role of CS is and that he has called on the Leaders to engage CS actors that know their own community best and can get a message out on peace and reconciliation to help advance the peace process. More on these statements at the Inauguration Ceremony of the second phase of ENGAGE this Tuesday, 21 February!
